Emma Stone won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her performance as the aspiring actress Mia in La La Land on Sunday Night.
The actress was nominated alongside 20th Century Women’s Annette Bening, Rules Don’t Apply’s Lily Collins, The Edge of Seventeen’s Hailee Steinfeld and Florence Foster Jenkins’ Meryl Streep.
“This is a film for dreamers. I think that hope and creativity are two of the most important things in the world,” said Stone in her acceptance speech.
Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, which costars Stone and Ryan Gosling (who won the award for Best Actor Comedy/Musical), has received widespread praise for its originality in terms of storyline, score and cinematography. The musical earned the most nominations of the night–a total of seven, winning Best Original Score, Best Screenplay, Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical, Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Director and Best Original Song. The movie has also been a hit at the box office, already grossing over double its $30 million budget.
Stone, who is a triple threat of charm in this film with her singing, dancing and acting, has been charming audiences since her supporting role in 2007’s Superbad, but didn’t fully breakout until her star turn in 2010’s Easy A, a box-office hit that also won her a Golden Globe nomination. With her co-starring role in 2011’s The Help, Stone began gaining more serious critical acclaim and was nominated for a Golden Globe and Academy Award for her supporting role in 2015’s Birdman.
