Breakout Moment: “Easy A”
Emma Stone had a bit of a breakout moment in 2009′s “Zombieland”, but it’s with “Easy A” that she truly made the world sit up and pay attention, and not just at the lingerie-clad musical number she performs at the movie’s climax. Not only was “Easy A” one of the biggest hits of 2010, in the film, Stone exuded pitch-perfect comedic timing, confidence, grace and charisma to the extent that had more than one critic saying her name in conjunction with the word Oscar, a feat nearly unheard of with female-centric teen comedies since Reese Witherspoon’s Tracy Flick in “Election”. However, she did snag a well-deserved Golden Globe nomination just this morning, and she’ll have another serious shot at Oscar next year when she goes dramatic as the lead in “The Help”, based on the civil rights era set bestseller by Kathryn Stockett. Oh, did we forget to mention she’ll play Gwen Stacy opposite Garfield in 2012′s “Spider-Man”?

There’s a new high school comedy coming to the big screens and, believe it or not, it’s inspired by the classic “The Scarlet Letter.” The story of a high school student who relies on the campus rumor mill to advance her social standing, “Easy A” attempts to fuse a timeless work of literature with a contemporary milieu.

Not really a strict adaptation of the book, the filmmakers took the thematic elements from the classic as inspiration for this modern-day tale of the struggle between puritanical values and being one’s self.

“Easy A” stars Emma Stone (“The House Bunny,” “Superbad”) as Olive Penderghast, a typical American high school girl dreaming about the one thing every teenager dreams of: popularity. Deciding to embellish a bit when her popular best friend Rhiannon (Aly Michalka) asks her how she’s spent her weekend, Olive unknowingly set herself up for a little notoriety, especially when the tightly wound, evangelical Marianne Bryant (Amanda Bynes) overhears her accounts. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the summer comedy EASY A, starring Emma Stone, Thomas Hayden Church, Amanda Bynes and Lisa Kudrow, will be coming out right before Christmas on December 21, 2010. The film received great reviews and did pretty well at the box office. The film is loosely based on The Scarlett Letter and follows Stone’s character as she willingly tarnishes her good girl reputation to gain better social and financial standing in her high school.

I know this film will be on my Christmas list this year as I’ve become a fan of Emma Stone’s work. Even though the SPIDER-MAN reboot sounds less than thrilling, I think it was a good choice to cast Ms. Stone as Gwen Stacy. Hopefully she and Mr. Garfield will do justice to the franchise, although they’ll never replace Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in my book. Special features for EASY A include:
